Press kit · not another digital menu board

A menu board designed by AI, from the shop owner's own words

With every digital menu board on the market, the design is the problem. Either somebody else does it: the shop pays a designer or the signage company, waits, and gets back a third party's guess at what was in the owner's head, then pays again for every update. Or the owner is handed design software and templates and left to it, which is a job they have no time for and were never trained to do.

Counterboard, a new British product, gives the job to AI. The owner says what they want in their own words and AI designs the finished board in about a minute. Not right? They say what to change. No designer, no design software, nothing to learn.

The story

Why it exists

Prices in a takeaway, a cafe or a barber's have moved more in the last few years than in the decade before, and the board on the wall has not kept up: reprinting costs money and takes weeks, so shops cross prices out, tape over them, or lose money on the old ones. The shops that moved to TV screens are often no better off. Somebody else designed the board, so every change, from a price to a Christmas special, means contracting them again: the owner cannot design it themselves, because that is a skill they never needed, and the designer is a third party trying to picture what is in the owner's head. It comes back not quite right, it costs money each time, and it takes days.

Counterboard makes AI the designer, and the owner the one giving the orders. They say what they want in their own words, or show it a board they like the look of, and a finished board is designed in about a minute. Not what they pictured? They say what to change and it is drawn again, as many times as they like, until it is exactly what was in their head. No design skill and no design work, no third party guessing, no invoice for every change. A new price, a summer look, a special for the weekend: they do it themselves, from their phone.

It was built in a working fish and chip shop. There is no installer either: it runs in the browser of a smart TV, or on a Fire TV Stick plugged into any television.

“If you have TV menu boards today, you know the routine. Every time you need an update you have to contract somebody, because you cannot design it yourself: you do not have the skills, and why would you? And that somebody is a third party trying to visualise what is in your head, so it comes back not quite right, and you pay again. And doing it yourself with design software is no better: it is hours you do not have. Not any more. With Counterboard, AI is your designer. Say what you want in your own words and a minute later it is on your TV. Do not like it? Say so, and it is drawn again. Prices, a new look, a special for the weekend: you do it yourself, from your phone, as often as you like.”

The facts

For checking

What it does

Photograph a price list (or type it). Describe the look in plain words. A finished board is drawn in about a minute, with the shop's name and prices on it; say what to change and it is drawn again. Open counterboard.com/tv on the TV, type the six letters it shows into a phone, and the board is on the wall. Change a price on the phone and every screen follows in seconds. The TV holds the whole board, so it stays up if the internet drops.

Who it is for

Any business with prices on a wall: takeaways, fish and chip shops, pizzerias, kebab shops, cafes, bakeries, dessert parlours, food trucks, barbers, nail bars, salons, bars, gyms, car washes, garages. It is sold in any country.

What it costs

14 days free, with no card. Then by the number of screens at one address, from £14 (US$19, €17) a month for one screen to £45 (US$59, €53) a month for five or more. Every feature is included at every price. No hardware to buy, no set-up fee, no contract.

What it needs

A television. A smart TV's own web browser is enough; a Fire TV Stick makes any other television work. Nothing is installed in the shop.

Partners

Businesses that already sell to small shops (trade bodies, till companies, shopfitters, food trailer builders, packaging printers) can recommend Counterboard and earn 50% of what those shops pay for their first year and 20% after it; their customers get three months free. counterboard.com/partners

The film

The 36-second film at the top of this page, with its music: AI designs a menu board from a shop owner's own words, it goes on the TV, and a price is changed from a phone. Made to be watched on a phone, so it is tall rather than wide.
